Skin Checks

Skin checks are recommended for individuals with a history of sun exposure or those who have noticed new or changing spots.

Regular skin examinations can assist in identifying changes early.

    • Full skin examination

    • Use of dermatoscope where appropriate

    • Discussion of any areas of concern

    • Management plan if required

    • People over 50

    • Those with fair skin or significant sun exposure

    • Personal or family history of skin cancer

    • New or changing lesions

  • A GP with an interest in skin is your first point of contact for most skin concerns. They can perform skin checks, assess spots or rashes, and carry out many minor procedures. They have additional training and experience in skin health as part of their general practice work.

A dermatologist is a specialist in skin conditions. They complete several extra years of training and often see patients with more complex or less common skin issues, usually after a referral from a GP.

A plastic surgeon is a specialist surgeon who performs more complex procedures, including reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. They may be involved when a condition requires more advanced surgical management.

Many patients are cared for by a combination of these practitioners, with referrals arranged when needed.

  • Most minor skin procedures are performed using a local anaesthetic to numb the area, which helps minimise discomfort during the procedure. You may feel a brief sting with the anaesthetic, but after this the area is usually quite comfortable.

After the procedure, it’s common to have some mild soreness or tenderness for a few days, which generally settles on its own.

Any procedure that involves the skin can result in a scar. The size and appearance of the scar can vary depending on the type of procedure, the location on the body, and how the area heals. Care is taken to minimise scarring as much as possible, and you will be given advice on how to look after the area to support healing.

If you have any concerns, these can be discussed in detail prior to the procedure so you know what to expect.
